Historical Safari & Trekker Routes of Southern Africa
Interactive geospatial plots tracing the monumental routes of the Boere Trekkers, Sir Percy FitzPatrick's Jock of the Bushveld transport rider trail, early warden conservation patrols, and ancient trans-Limpopo ivory trade corridors. Verified against authentic 19th-century diaries, government gazettes, and national monument cairns.
Route of Jock of the Bushveld
Die Roete van Jock van die Bosveld
Sir Percy FitzPatrick's 1880s Delagoa Bay to Pilgrim's Rest Wagon Trail
The legendary Lowveld transport rider route immortalized in Sir Percy FitzPatrick's 1907 masterpiece. Ox wagons laden with mining machinery, trade goods, and safari provisions hauled freight from the fever-ridden port of Delagoa Bay (Maputo) across the deadly tsetse fly belt and Crocodile River up through the Drakensberg escarpment to the gold fields of Barberton and Pilgrim's Rest.
Before the completion of the Pretoria-Lourenço Marques railway in 1895, all freight into the eastern Transvaal gold fields had to be hauled by spans of 16 to 18 Afrikaner oxen. Transport riding was a perilous profession plagued by blackwater fever, sleeping sickness carried by tsetse flies, marauding lions, flooded river drifts, and sheer mountain passes.
Deadly Lowveld malaria zones, nagana (tsetse fly disease killing oxen), swollen Crocodile and Komati river crossings infested with crocodiles, and the brutal vertical ascent of the Devil's Knuckles and Long Tom Pass.
Commemorated by official bronze waymark plaques throughout Kruger National Park, the Jock Safari Lodge private concession, and the bronze statue of Jock at the Barberton Town Hall.

Outspan by Outspan: The Expedition Chronicle
Chronological stages of the trek with verified GPS coordinates, historic quotes, and monument locations.
Delagoa Bay Port (Lourenço Marques)
Delagoabaai Hawe (Maputo)
The coastal harbor where steamers unloaded mining equipment, whiskey, guns, and trade goods. Wagons were loaded here in oppressive heat before dashing through the coastal fly belt by night.
“The start from the Bay was always a scramble and a rush, for every hour spent in the fly country was counted against the lives of our oxen.”
Komatipoort Border Outspan
Komatipoort Uitspanplek
The strategic border post between Mozambique and the South African Republic where the Komati and Crocodile rivers converge through the Lebombo mountains.
Crocodile River Drift & Biyamiti
Krokodilrivierdrif
A notorious river crossing where wagons often had to be double-spanned (36 oxen) to pull through quicksand and rushing currents with crocodiles watching from the sandbanks.
“The river was up, a swirling coffee-coloured flood. The whip cracked like rifle shots, and the oxen threw their weight into the yokes.”
Ship Mountain Outspan
Skipberg Uitspanplek
A dramatic flat-topped granite inselberg resembling an upturned ship's hull. Here FitzPatrick and Jock camped for weeks, hunted koodoo, and Jock had his legendary duel with the baboon troop.
“Ship Mountain stood out like an island in a sea of bush... It was our home for many a week, and every kloof held a memory of good hunting and hard tracking.”
Pretoriuskop Outspan
Pretoriuskop Uitspan
Elevated grassland outspan free of the deadly tsetse fly. Transport riders rested their exhausted oxen here before attempting the granite foothills of Legogote.
Legogote Peak Landmark
Legogotekop Baken
A dramatic vertical thumb of granite that was visible for 50 miles in every direction, serving as the celestial guidepost for wagon trains traveling between the coast and the highveld.
“When you saw the blue thumb of Legogote against the sunset, you knew the worst of the fly country was behind you.”
Barberton (FitzPatrick's Town)
Barberton Goudvelde
The booming gold capital where Sir Percy FitzPatrick lived and worked. Wagons unloaded heavy mining stamps, and transport riders gathered at the clubs and canteens.
Devil's Knuckles & Long Tom Pass
Duiwelsknokkels & Long Tompas
A treacherous, razor-sharp ridge where wagons had to be manhandled with block-and-tackle and double teams of 32 oxen. A single slip meant plunging 2,000 feet into the gorge.
“It was double-span work on the Knuckles. Oxen fell to their knees on the polished slate, blood running from their nostrils in the thin, cold mountain air.”
Lydenburg Staging Outspan
Lydenburg Uitspan
The peaceful agricultural center where transport riders rested their oxen on rich clover pastures and restocked fresh biltong, mealie meal, and grease for the wagon axles.
Pilgrim's Rest (Final Terminus)
Pelgrimsrus Eindbestemming
The picturesque mountain valley where gold was discovered in 1873. Freight delivery here earned the transport riders gold sovereigns before their return journey back to the coast.
“We rolled into the valley with the brakes groaning and the whip cracking like thunder. The journey was done; the wagons were home.”
“The wagons roll where the red sand calls; the memory of the wild is etched in stone.”
“Under the African stars, the wild speaks.”
